Objects of Desire: Samoa Recycled Notebooks
On the face of it, a subtle and understated book. Though it certainly looks smart, the desire element really comes from the fact that it is completely made from recycled papers, the inside pages being fully made from post-consumer waste.
High quality recycled books have been a long time coming with most options having a distinctly poor quality of paper inside. Not so the Samoa which has excellent quality smooth white paper, working well with ink pens and pencils alike. The pages are made from 100% recycled fibres, or paper that has been previously used, and manufactured using green energy. The cover is partly made from the same used paper but also from single use coffee cups that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
The books give the unwanted waste a new lease of life and an opportunity to be used and appreciated again. And when they are no longer required, they too can be recycled again in the paper stream, along with cereal boxes, packaging and other discarded paper. The muted colour palette has a natural rustic feel, in keeping with the ethos of the book, and they are discretely but firmly marked on the back cover with the recycling logo and the 100% recycled statement. Thus ensuring that users appreciate this green and responsible notebook that also looks so appealing.
